Obituary: Éva Vámos

With deep sadness we have to announce that Prof. Dr. Éva Vámos passed away on 25th July, 2015 in Budapest, at the age of 65 after hard illnesses. With the death of her our profession has lost one of its most active historians of science and technology, and former Vice President of the Commission on Women in Science and Gender Studies (Women’s Commission) of the Division of History of Science and Technology of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology.

Éva Vámos belonged to the founders of our Women’s Commission in August in 1981 at the XVI International Congress of History of Science in Bucharest, and she was the chair person of the Local Organising Committee of the XXIII International Congress of History of Science and Technology which was held in Budapest from 28 July to 2 Augst 2009.

Éva Vámos served as director of the Hungarian Museum for Science and Technology in Budapest for many years, she contributed to museology, to the history of chemistry and chemical industry, and to the history of women scientists. She was a member in several interantional organisations on history of science and technology, among others of the DHST/IUHPST, and the European Society for History of Science.

Éva Vámos was warm and sympathetic, always generous in her appreciation of others’ achievements and unfailingly helpful to their aspirations. Those who knew her will sorely miss her, will never forget her support and her advice, and her energetic encouragement of research and collaboration. Those who had the good fortune to meet Éva Vámos, moreover, who had the good fortune to meet and talk to her privately, will never forget her great knowledge and intelligence, her cosmopolitan views and behavior, and her kindness. She will be always in our memories as a unique person and a good friend.
