Diderot and D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie represented a very significant moment in the history of the transmission of knowledge, particularly scientific knowledge, in the European Enlightenment, notably because of the brand new importance it gave to illustrations, engraved and commented plates, which occupy 11 folio volumes alongside the 17 volumes of articles. At a time when a critical digital edition of this work, the ENCCRE, is being developed, the present colloquium intends to take stock of the research specifically dedicated to the plates of the Encyclopédie and to measure their place in the history of scientific illustration in the 18th century.
